![]() Welcome to the Way-Ont Team Penning site |
A team of riders must cut from the herd and pen three head of cattle with the same assigned identity number. The fastest time out of 60 seconds wins. A warning must be given to the team working the cattle at 30 seconds prior to the final time being called. Ant team with established times on record may ride with less than their three riders in order to keep the team in the point standings. The team must however pay for all three riders.
All cattle must be bunched to the center on the far end of the arena by two participants of the previous team that was in the ring unless a rider asks for assistance. They will hold the cattle until the next team are ready and the announcer tells the team to go. The holders must exit the arena carefully and as quickly as possible to not interfere with the next team.
All teams must be ready to ride. If you make the announcer wait and continue to call your team to the arena; you will have to forfeit your ride.
The team must enter the ring and proceed to the top of the arena near the announcer’s booth. The start/ stop line will be the imaginary line from the line judge at the pen to the far side of the arena. The announcer will ask the team in the arena if they are ready and the time will start when the announcer says “GO”. At this time the announcer will give the number of the cows that the team needs to pen and will start the clock.
To call for time, at least one rider must stand in the gate long enough to raise their hand and have the nose of the horse of their horse cross the plane of the gate for the judge to see. When the flag drops; time will be called. No horse may enter the pen past the saddle horn and no trash cows are allowed in the pen at any time or your team will receive a “no time”.
All trash cows must be back behind the foul line before time can be given for your ride.
A team may pen less than 3 head at any time as long as they are the correct number cattle they were given and no trash cows are in front of the foul line. The team will receive a time for 1 or 2 cows penned. However, teams penning 3 head of cattle will place higher than teams with 2, and 2 higher than teams penning 1 regardless of your time.
If 5 or more cattle are across the foul line at any time, that team will be judged a no time. Any part of the fifth cow that crosses the line will invoke the no time.
Unnecessary roughness is defined at a deliberate or intentional act. If any rider is showing signs of roughing the cattle and/ or horse, the rider will receive one warning from the flagger or the penning committee members. The announcer will write down the rider’s name. If the rider continues or does it again at any time during the remainder of the event; the rider and the team he/ or she is in the arena with will be disqualified for the rider.
In the event more or less than three cattle with the same identification tags are within the herd, the team must be given a re-ride.
If an error is made by the line judges, announcer, or by the electronic timer, the team will receive a re-ride.
Fall from horse or rider shall not eliminate the entry. However if the judge or committee members need to enter the ring for an injury they decide is extreme and dangerous enough to stop the run, a no time will be given to the team.
All efforts will be made to have the same line judges and announcer for the whole event.
In case of a tie for first place at the end of the event there will be a run-off to break the tie. The teams will run a normal round of 60 seconds for 3 head of cattle. The team with the best time and most cattle penned is the winner. The other team will take second place for the event.
If you wish to contest your ride, your team must stay in the arena and you must give the announcer $50.00. You then will have the attention of the whole committee to review your complaint or issue. If the committee decides that you are correct, you will get your $50.00 back and receive a re-ride. If you are judged by the committee to not be correct or you are just complaining; you forfeit your $50.00 to the club.
