Ranch Horse
The Ranch Horse competition is relatively new, especially in this part of the country. It began out west as a test for real working cowhorses. It has now become a pointed event in AQHA.
The classes are as follows:
Trail - obstacles that one might actually encounter on a working ranch such as opening a gate, crossing a bridge, dragging a heavy object, jumping a small obstacle, crossing water or other hazard, ground-tying, backing.
Cutting - a cow is cut from a herd, worked in the ring and then penned.
Pleasure - everyone works on the rail at a walk, jog, extended jog, lope and extended lope; horses should have good movement with a natural head set.
Working Ranch Horse - the contestant enters the ring, does a reining pattern; then a cow is released and is worked along the fence and lastly the cow is roped (or not :)
Halter - tack is removed and the horse is shown in a halter at a walk and a jog, looking for conformation and movement.
Points for each class are totaled and high point wins the competition; if there is a tie, the person who placed highest in the Working Ranch Horse class is the winner. The horse is being judged here, not the rider (although good riding usually helps in any competition) or the tack. Riders are expected to dress in a long-sleeved shirt, jeans, and a hat. Tack should be clean and in good working condition, but not with a lot of silver. Horses should be fit, clean and well-groomed but not closely clipped or polished - these are supposed to be working ranch horses. For those who are tired of the world of specialization, this is a show which rewards the horse and rider who can do it all.
